Open OpportunitiesGears are the backbone of the aircraft transmission systems, facilitating critical power transfer and speed adjustments for various components. Their flawless operation is the key to the seamless flight of lightning-fast fighter jets, commercial airliners, and agile helicopters.
As the demand for precise, robust, and dependable gears continues to rise, addressing production bottlenecks becomes increasingly crucial in meeting aviation's evolving needs. A significant contributor to these bottlenecks is the grinding operation, the final step in production. In the pursuit of achieving higher production efficiency by pushing the limits of process parameters, grinding burns often appear on the workpiece surface. These grinding burns are undesirable. They occur due to excess heat accumulation which impacts residual stresses and metallurgical structures, potentially leading to component cracks and failures. The rejection of such workpieces wastes time and resources, ultimately diminishing production efficiency.
The primary focus of this thesis is the early detection of grinding burns within the manufacturing process, achieved through the utilization of acoustic emission and current sensors in combination with critical process parameters. A mathematical model will be developed based on machine learning modeling techniques combining the sensors data, process parameters and evaluated surface quality. The objectives are prediction of grinding burn, and subsequently, optimization of the grinding process for higher productivity. - Interdisciplinary Engineering, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Statistics

| The main tract for transmitting noxious stimuli is the spinothalamic tract, receiving its input from different types of small fibers in the skin i.e., mechanical- or heat-sensitive fibers. In spinal cord injury as in other pathologies involving neuropathic pain and sensation deficits, it is crucial to assess spinothalamic tract integrity with objective methods. This depends on a well-characterized stimulation modality, activating small fibers, and implies the recording of brain activity in response to this stimulation (electroencephalography; EEG). Intra-epidermal electrical stimulation (IES) using a concentric triple electrode is known for its clinical potential due to small fiber activation and is a good candidate for the activation of the spinothalamic tract. However, to implement IES as a diagnostic tool in the clinical routine, feasibility, and test-retest reliability need to be assessed compared to other stimulation modalities. - Central Nervous System, Neurology and Neuromuscular Diseases, Peripheral Nervous System, Sensory Systems

| Diaxxo (diaxxo.com) is a start-up originated at ETH Zürich, where in the past 4 years we have
developed and prototyped an innovative Point-of-Care Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) device. Our
vision is to bring the power of molecular diagnostics to every doctor’s office, thanks to our new
pre-loaded PCR test kits that allow for simpler and faster sample preparation steps. In 2020 our
devices have been used by more than 250 laypeople for the rapid detection of COVID-19 in a field
study that we run at ETH Zürich, and our systems are currently being tested at the Swiss Tropical and

| Following trauma or due to degeneration it can be necessary to replace one or more intervertebral discs with an implant, a so-called Total Disc Replacement (TDR). Such devices enable motion though surfaces articulating against each other. While this treatment is clinically successful, it is connected to considerable complication and reoperation rates. Therefore, we are optimizing the design of such an implant to address these issues.
While many different designs and design types have been proposed and are used in clinical practice, there is no consensus on what design or design type is the most beneficial. However, it is hypothesized, that replicating the situation that is present in healthy (asymptomatic) subjects as closely as possible, is optimal. Since the motions of the cervical spine are coupled (coupling of rotation and translation as well as multiple rotations) the optimal design of the articulating surfaces is not obvious. Therefore, this master’s thesis project aims at designing the implants articulating surfaces using parametric design optimization in LS-OPT based on finite element simulations. - Engineering and Technology

| Epilepsy is a disorder characterized by recurrent seizures and for some patients surgery becomes a viable option for treatment. Intraoperative electrocorticography (ECoG) is used during epilepsy surgery to identify epileptiform patterns in real-time. We recently proposed a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) that can detect epileptiform patterns during surgery: https://dx.doi.org/10.1038/s41467-024-47495-y. This project proposes the optimization of such a system, leveraging the BCI2000 software platform and the DYNAP-SE neuromorphic chip. - Biomedical Engineering, Information, Computing and Communication Sciences
