| Model Predictive Control (MPC) is extensively utilized in industry and academia. However, designing an optimal cost function and constraints for achieving the best closed-loop performance remains an open challenge. This project seeks to bridge this gap by framing the problem as a policy optimization problem and solving it through the application of gradient-based optimization schemes. - Electrical Engineering

| Abstract
Reinforcement learning (RL) has achieved remarkable performance in various domains such as gaming, protein folding, and foundation models. However, efficiently applying RL to real-world applications like go-kart racing and urban driving presents significant challenges due to high-dimensional environments and the lack of structured task decomposition. This thesis proposes addressing these challenges through prioritized rewards and hierarchical task decomposition. By incorporating prioritized experience replay and dynamic reward shaping, the learning process focuses on critical experiences, enhancing efficiency. Hierarchical RL will break down complex tasks into manageable sub-tasks for better strategic planning and execution. The goal is to develop robust and adaptable RL agents capable of high performance in both racing and urban driving scenarios. The student will select a specific application domain, define benchmarks, and potentially conduct real-world testing. The outcomes are expected to contribute significantly to robotics research, with potential publications in top conferences and journals. Pre-requisites include a strong interest in machine learning, RL, optimization, robotics, and proficiency in Python. Prior experience in autonomous vehicles or robotics is a plus. - Automotive Engineering, Intelligent Robotics, Knowledge Representation and Machine Learning

| Background: Topology is vital in medical image segmentation, emphasizing anatomically correct structures & removing incorrect ones. Previous works [1-3] explored how to enforce topological constraints, however, are applied only at training. Recent diffusion-based models [4, 5] offer a novel way to enforce topological constraints during inference.
MSc Thesis: First, you will develop a diffusion model for segmentation. Next, you will be devising a novel way to integrate topological constraints in the diffusion model. Importantly, we aim to publish the results of this work with you at a high-impact conference or journal. - Artificial Intelligence and Signal and Image Processing, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Interdisciplinary Engineering, Mathematical Sciences

| Non-healing wounds are a significant medical challenge, and tissue engineering offers a promising solution for skin regeneration. This project aims to accelerate skin graft production for severe wound healing by focusing on the mechanobiology of human dermal fibroblasts. Understanding how cells sense and react to stimuli will allow us to create conditions that promote cell proliferation. In this project we will particularly focus on hydrostatic pressure and stiffness. To apply and measure the effects of these stimuli, bioreactors are essential tools. They enable the cultivation of cells in a controlled environment while applying various stimuli, including hydrostatic pressure and stiffness. The goal of this thesis is to design a bioreactor from scratch and optimize its parameters based on experimental findings related to cell proliferation rates. By tailoring the bioreactor conditions, we can affect cell proliferation. - Mechanical Engineering

| Cutting-edge tools play a pivotal role in manufacturing processes, enduring wear and damage while consistently producing series of components. Maintaining an optimal cutting-edge geometry is crucial to uphold the quality of finished products over time. Additionally, sustaining the micro-geometry of the cutting edge is key to enhancing the lifespan of the tool and ensuring top-notch cutting performance. Profin addresses this challenge with Flakkotting, a novel surface finishing process designed explicitly to create and preserve the required micro-geometry.
This project aims to investigate the brittle interaction of the flakkotting tool with the cutting-edge workpiece through experiments manipulating various machine parameters. Interactions will be recorded using a high-speed camera, and the footage will be analyzed with advanced computer vision techniques to extract key bristle characteristics and variables such as length, deflection, and speed. These variables will form the basis for calculating forces, determining bristle-tool contact, assessing total contact time, and understanding the mechanisms of bristle interaction. The insights gained will contribute to developing analytical or data-driven models that optimize the flakkotting process. - Computer Vision, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering

| Do you want to work on smart control algorithms that control the infrastructure of a road network to optimize vehicle traffic flows? And do you want to try them out in a fully-fledged traffic simulator called SUMO? Then this is thesis project is for you.
The goal of this thesis is to develop an infrastructural control algorithm that optimizes efficiency and fairness of road traffic flows. You can choose one from the following control applications: intersection management (control flow at intersection), ramp metering (control flow that enters highways), perimeter control (control flows between cells/regions of an urban network).
Optional, if interested: depending on your progress and results, we can also support & guide you with creating a scientific publication for your first steps into academia. - Control Engineering, Road and Rail Transportation, Simulation and Modelling, Systems Theory and Control
