Metabolic fingerprints for Warburg effect in breast cancer cell lines

[Intern, Sem, MSc] It is of special importance to study cancer metabolism due to the profound reprogramming in central metabolism associated with many tumors. To investigate metabolism, while metabolomics informs on the state of a cell with metabolite concentrations, metabolic flux analysis monitors metabolic activity. Here we aim at developing methods that can qualify intracellular fluxes in human cells. The approach will serve to characterize which metabolic changes are necessary to achieve cancerous phenotypes, in particular Warburg effect.

We aim to use superresolution microscopy to investigate changes in spine structure during expression of synaptic plasticity in live neurons.

In this thesis a (additional) translation method should be evaluated and tested in the lab.
[Intern, BSc, Sem, MSc] Polyelectrolyte electrophoresis underlies ubiquitous protocols for protein separation and DNA manipulation. Yet theories to explain it are limited to low charges and high screening to make the equations analytically solvable. Besides, the deformable polymer chain is a difficult boundary condition. In this project we will study the high-charge and low-screening limit numerically using a Monte-Carlo lattice-Boltzmann model, which efficiently solves the flow past the deformable polyelectrolyte.
