| What about implantable self-powering devices to monitor biophysical signals at nanoscale? As a part of the interdisciplinary frontier between material science and new biomedical applications, being able to monitor biological or physical markers and signals, allows for a better treatment from both the diagnostic and healing point of view. Among them, biocompatible and non-intrusive wearable monitoring devices, which are so flexible to adhere perfectly to biological tissue, and even to cells like neurons, gain increasing interest. However, fabricating the devices and the electrodes at nano/microscale remains a challenge.
FluidFM is a force-controlled nanopipette, a versatile tool also for 2D patterning and 3D printing in liquid environment, opening the opportunity to manufacture the devices at the sub-micron scale.
We are going to create the devices and electrodes depositing conductive polymers with the FluidFM and then to perform the opportune characterization. - Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Materials Engineering, Medical and Health Sciences, Physics

| Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is a unique group of autoimmune diseases. Researches have demonstrated that antibody-induced disruption of Dsg3 transadhesion initiates a signaling response in basal keratinocytes followed by loss of tissue integrity. The complexity of morphogenesis and tissue regeneration implies the existence of a transcellular communication network in which individual cells sense the environment and coordinate their biological activity in time and space.
To understand the fascinating ability of tissue self-organization, comprehensive study of biophysical properties (cell topography and bioelectricity) in combination with the analysis of biochemical networks (signaling pathways and genetic circuits) is required.
Together with the University of Bern and University of Lübeck, we aim to utilize the tools to study the topography and electrophysiology (cell potential, ion channel recording, localized ion detection, charges) of HPEK cells (human primary keratinocytes cells) to unravel the signaling pathways of the disease. We utilize optical imaging (fluorescence dyes) and biosensing tools (including the state of the art hs-SICM and electrical FluidFM setup) to study HPEK cells upon desmosome disruption.

| Reinforcement learning (RL) can potentially solve complex problems in a purely data-driven manner. Still, the state-of-the-art in applying RL in robotics, relies heavily on high-fidelity simulators. While learning in simulation allows to circumvent sample complexity challenges that are common in model-free RL, even slight distribution shift ("sim-to-real gap") between simulation and the real system can cause these algorithms to easily fail. Recent advances in model-based reinforcement learning have led to superior sample efficiency, enabling online learning without a simulator. Nonetheless, learning online cannot cause any damage and should adhere to safety requirements (for obvious reasons). The proposed project aims to demonstrate how existing safe model-based RL methods can be used to solve the foregoing challenges. - Engineering and Technology

| The project consists in assessing the degree to which our perception of natural texture is shaped by the mechanics of the skin. We have implemented an approach, developed by Ted Adelson at MIT (GelSight), that consists of fabricating a gel whose material properties match those of the skin and then imaging (using a laser profilometer) the pattern of deformation on the surface of the gel that is produced when pressed against the surface. We can then estimate how the skin would be deformed by any given texture using this approach and assess whether we can better predict from these patterns of skin deformation the responses of tactile nerve fibers to that texture and the perception thereof. - Biomedical Engineering, Central Nervous System, Sensory Systems

| Our previous studies has identified that the nature of signals recorded with electrodes implanted in the peripheral nervous system strongly depends on the type of electrode and the degree of activity inside the nerve. For this project your aim will be to further explore which dimension of a population activity a given type of electrode can identify. Based on the literature you will identify discharge patterns combination permitting to recreate the main different classes of bio-plausible population activity. You will also complete the existing hybrid model to integrate the main kinds of electrodes used with neural interfaces (use of Solidworks, Matlab, and Comsol).
You will then implement your bio-mimetic population activity in the full model and study each electrode’s dynamic selectivity. Your final goal would be to establish rules permitting to classify from the recording alone what “family” of activity is happening in the nerve.

| Sensory feedback based on intracortical microstimulation has been shown to improve subjects’ ability to use brain-controlled bionic hands (Flesher et al., 2021). However, the resulting dexterity is still far from that of natural hands in able-bodied individuals. Efforts to sensitize bionic hands for amputees by electrical stimulation of the nerves have shown that sensory feedback that mimics natural tactile signals (so called biomimetic feedback (Okorokova et al., 2018; Saal and Bensmaia, 2015; Saal et al., 2017) evokes more natural and more intuitive sensations that better support interactions with objects than does non-biomimetic feedback. | The somatosensory system is crucial to the formation and maintenance of coherent mental representations of our bodies. Traditional concepts of somatosensation have been shaped by the principles of somatotopic and hierarchical organization of the primary somatosensory cortex (S1). However, emerging psychophysical phenomena have been studied mostly with natural touch only that undergoes extensive processing along the tactile system, and it is unclear at which stages these phenomena arise. Intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) of S1 allows to directly evoke vivid touch sensations on the body, the properties of which can by systematically manipulated by varying the parameters of stimulation. In this work, we use ICMS of human S1 in three implanted participants to define cortical-body maps of the human hand and then to link these mental-body perception maps. - Biomedical Engineering, Central Nervous System, Sensory Systems

| Touch is a complex, multisensory perceptual process (de Haan and Dijkerman, 2020; de Lafuente and Romo, 2006; Graziano and Gross, 1993). In non-human primates (NHPs), multisensory input (e.g., visual, tactile) converges upon neurons in higher-order brain regions such as the posterior pari- etal cortex (PPC) where they are integrated into coherent representations (Graziano and Gross, 1993; Avillac et al., 2007; Graziano, 1999; Graziano, 2001; Graziano et al., 2000; Holmes and Spence, 2004; Hwang et al., 2014; Seelke et al., 2012; Sereno and Huang, 2014). Recent human neuroimaging studies suggest that the PPC is also recruited during touch cognition in the absence of actual tactile input (e.g., seen touch or imagined touch), supporting a notion that both higher- level touch processing and tactile cognition share a neural substrate (Chan and Baker, 2015; Lucas et al., 2015). To date, however, such a link has not been established at the single neuron level. - Biomedical Engineering, Central Nervous System, Sensory Systems

| While camera-based capture systems remain the gold standard for recording human motion, learning-based tracking systems based on sparse wearable sensors are gaining popularity. Most commonly, they use inertial sensors, whose propensity for drift and jitter have so far limited tracking accuracy. Ultra-wideband (UWB) is a radio technology that offers precise ranging capabilities and is integrated into modern smart devices such as iPhones and Apple AirTags. Our recent work, Ultra Inertial Poser, accepted by SIGGRAPH'24, has shown great potential to combine IMU with UWB sensors to constrain drift and jitter in inertial tracking via inter-sensor distances. As we are in the early stages of development, there is still significant room for improvement in the methodology. In this project, we aim to design a deep learning model to improve our dataset's human motion tracking results.

| 3D hand pose forecasting is a new benchmark introduced by HoloAssist [1]. Existing action forecasting work mostly focuses on providing semantic labels of future actions and does not provide explicit 3D guidance on hand poses. Predicting 3D hand poses can be useful for various applications, and it can augment instructions and spatially guide users in different tasks. In this benchmark, we take 3 seconds inputs similar to other 3D body location forecasting literature and forecast the continuous 3D hand poses for the next 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 seconds. The evaluation metric is the average of mean per joint position error over time in centimeters compared to ground truth. To have a proper evaluation metric that can help 3D action guidance, we remove the mistakes from the action sequences and only forecast 3D hand pose for the correct labels.

| Action recognition is an essential task in computer vision and has numerous applications in various fields, including robotics, surveillance, and healthcare. The recognition of actions involves the analysis of temporal and spatial information within a video sequence. Current state-of-the-art methods use 3D hand and object poses for action recognition, where the object's corners are commonly used for representation. However, this approach has limitations in accurately modeling the hand-object interaction. In [1], we show that leveraging hand-object contact-map representation helps improve action recognition. However, this representation can be learned implicitly for the task of action recognition.

| The recent development of LLMs (Large Language Models), such as ChatGPT and Llama, opens up new possibilities for understanding procedural actions. In the past, action recognition was restricted to the classification of visual frames. However, with LLMs, the model can observe the whole action sequence in a more effective way and even predict the future actions [1]. In this project, students will explore how LLMs can improve action recognition in procedural tasks. Specifically, given a high-level procedural task (e.g., making coffee, copying a paper), students will use existing pretrained action recognition models to predict the top 5 actions for each clip and feed them into the LLMs to refine and correct the predicted actions. As a comparison, students will also establish a baseline using simple machine learning and statistical methods to correct actions.

| For a carbon-neutral energy system, it is key to achieve a high electrification of heat and transport and, at the same time, a high increase in energy supply from photovoltaics. However, energy supply and demand have to match every minute, and for example, photovoltaic power does not produce energy in the hours when power for heat pumps is in the most demand.
As a result, flexible power supply technologies like gas turbines have gained attention as a potential solution to balance energy demand (or to be used in case of emergency) [1]. In the first case, a carbon capture process is necessary to fit the definition of “net-zero” if natural gas is used. Alternatively, other promising fuels are emerging to reduce environmental impacts while phasing out other fossil fuels e.g. green ammonia and green hydrogen. Furthermore, the recent energy crisis boosted research on multi-fuel turbines [2], including bio-fuels [3].
While literature already investigated different multi-fuel gas turbines from a techno-economic perspective, a comparative prospective environmental assessment remains untapped.

| Mobility is typically self-optimized for a particular region to accommodate internal travel needs. However, as soon as one considers multiple, interacting regions (e.g., urban areas interacting with agglomerations, and agglomerations interacting with rural areas), important coordination issues occur, including scheduling mismatches, fleet allocations, and congestion peaks. In short, a mobility system composed of self-optimized mobility systems seems to often operate suboptimally.

The opposition usually focuses on aspects such as wildlife safety, biodiversi-ty protection, noise, visibility and landscape impacts, and loss in property values [2, 3]. For the effective implementation of wind farms, it is crucial to understand and address these varying facets of social accept-ability. This study aims to assess the perspectives of residents living near wind farms across different Euro-pean regions, employing Multicriteria Satisfaction Analysis (MUSA) [4]. The objective is to devise region-specific strategies to enhance the acceptability of wind energy projects. Additionally, this research will ex-plore the relationship between socio-demographic and geographical characteristics of the residents and their acceptance of wind power, aiming to uncover underlying factors influencing the social acceptability of wind energy. - Engineering and Technology

| Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is one of the most widespread nutritional deficiencies worldwide, increasing the risk for disability and death for more than two billion people. Iron supplements are needed for prevention of iron deficiency, especially among infants, children and pregnant women, and for correction of IDA in all affected individuals. Conventional iron supplements, commonly cause nausea, epigastric discomfort and other gastrointestinal side effects that lead many individuals to discontinue and avoid their use.
